We’re back for more slime fun!
My children are obsessed with three things – Lego, Fidget Spinners and Slime! One day I will figure out a way to combine all three. But for now we will kept them separate (well, except Lego and Fidget Spinners which we’ve already combined in this Lego Fidget Spinner!).
We’ve made quite a few different slime recipes over the last few months. I think my favorite up until now has been the Butter Slime – smooth, soft and stretchy! But I wanted to try something different.
My daughter is obsessed with all things mermaid. She loves all things ocean so when she asked if we could make “Mermaid Slime”, I knew we had to give it a try.

We’ve even made our own Super Bouncy Balls using the same supplies as slime!

Mermaid Slime
The mermaid slime starts off as a basic clear slime. It is a similar base to the one we used for the glitter slime – you can check out the full recipe here.
Supplies
To make mermaid slime you will need:
- One bottle of Elmer’s Clear Glue
- 1/2 teaspoon of Borax
- 1 cup of water (1/2 cup of cold/room temp water and 1/2 cup of hot water)
- Extra Fine Glitter (blue/green)
- Chunky Glitter (blue/green)
- Sequins (blue/green)
A note about Borax: I have always used Borax as a slime activator. I’ve been making slime with my children, nieces, nephews and school groups for over 10 years. I’ve never had any problems with it. But I understand some people are nervous about using it. If you choose not to use Borax, you can use contact lens solution instead.
When I use Borax I mix 1/2 teaspoon of Borax in 1/2 cup of warm water and mix until it is completely dissolved. Some recipes call for much more – but you only need a very tiny amount. When used in the proper qualities you shouldn’t have any problems.
Step 1: Prepare the Activiator
Follow this step if you are using Borax solution as your slime activator. If you decide to use contact lens solution, then you can skip this step.
In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 teaspoon of Borax and 1/2 cup of warm water.
Stir until it is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.
Step 2: Make the Slime Base
Mix together 1/2 cup of Elmer’s Clear Glue with 1/2 cup of water.
Make sure the water and glue are completely combined. If they are not then your slime will be lumpy.
I also mixed in some silver glitter glue from Dollar Tree. However, this made the mixture a little cloudy, so I don’t recommend this step. It is better to mix in more glitter afterwards.
Step 3: Mix Together
Slowly add small amounts of your slime activator (Borax solution in my case).
I normally add about 1 teaspoon at a time, mix well and then add a little more. Depending on the ingredients you have used it will take about 2-4 tablespoons of Borax solution to make slime – but this does vary, so take your time and add it slowly.
Make sure you mix well between adding each small amount of activator. It takes a short time for it to work, so you want to make sure it has fully reacted before adding more.
Once you have reached the slime consistency that you like, then you are ready to add your glitter!
Step 4: Adding Glitter
Using your hands, fold in the fine glitter first. You will want to add quite a lot of this as it soon disappears into in the slime.
Once the fine glitter is fully incorporated, you can add the chunky glitter. Once again you will need more of this than you think. Keep mixing it together until you have the amount of sparkle that you are looking for.
Lastly add the sequins. These give a wonderful crunchy texture to the slime as well as making it look like mermaid scales. We added quite a lot of sequins, but you can add as much as you want until you get your desired look.
Now you have delightfully stretchy and sparkly mermaid slime. This is a great idea to make at birthday parties and put in a small jar for a party favor!
What are your favorite slime recipes? Which do your children (or you!) enjoy making and playing with the most?
Hi,
My daughter is having a mermaid party in a couple of weeks and i wanted the kids to make slime as one of the activities. Can i prepare the activator solution ahead of time and also, mix the glue with water and place it in small containers ahead of time for the kids? Then at the party, all they have to do is add the activator to the slime container they have and add glitter/sequins etc.
How much advance prep can i do if i can prepare stuff in advance?
i really appreciate your quick response.
thank you
Yes, I would say you could definitely prepare it in advance. Just make sure you give it a good stir before making the slime, as it will separate a bit.
