Butter Slime Recipe – The Smoothest and Stretchiest Slime EVER!

Slime is becoming a part of our regular daily routine it seems. Almost every day my daughter asks if we can make slime. So we thought we would try this AWESOME Butter Slime recipe.

We’ve made it all:

We’ve even made our own Super Bouncy Balls using the same ingredients as slime!

One new type of slime that we hadn’t tried before was butter slime. There’s a lot of video and tutorials online for butter slime recipes and it looked intriguing and fun.

The ingredients are a little different to normal, so I needed to order some of it from Amazon. I think waiting for it to be delivered might have been the longest two days of my daughter’s life! She was desperate to try it! But it was soooo worth the wait!

This slime is AWESOME! It truly is the perfect slime recipe!

Best Slime Ever?

I have a small confession to make… I don’t like slime! It’s fun to make, but I hate how sticky it is. If it gets on the carpet or fabric then it sticks and if it dries then you’re really in trouble! I’m fed up of cleaning up after slime!

That’s why I think this butter slime recipe is pretty much my favorite slime! It’s smooth, soft and doesn’t stick to everything!

This butter slime is super SUPER stretchy! It’s so much fun to take hold of an end each and see how far across the room you can stretch it (we made it the full length of the room!).

Even my “too cool for slime” middle school son has enjoyed playing with it! This really is the perfect slime for sensory play for kids of all ages.

You definitely want to try this!

On that note, let’s get down to it! Here’s the step by step tutorial of how to make the super smooth and stretchy Butter Slime!’

Butter Slime Ingredients

You will need your regular slime making supplies, plus one very important addition – Model Magic Clay.

A few notes on the supplies:

Glue

I bought a one gallon bottle of Elmer’s glue at the beginning of the summer. It’s now October and we’ve still got some left. This was definitely the best investment I’ve made! I had no idea my kids would love making slime so much. If I had been buying the smaller bottles I would have spent a fortune by now! The gallon bottle is DEFINITELY the way to go!

I also like to get my glue from Amazon. Slime is SOOOOO popular right now, I’ve found a lot of store are sold out of basic slime making supplies. It’s so annoying to drive across town to buy the supplies and find they have sold out!

A gallon of glue is also about HALF the price on Amazon compared to our local craft stores! Win-win!

Slime Activator

I have always used Borax as a slime activator. I’ve been making homemade slime recipes with my children, nieces, nephews and school groups for over 12 years. I’ve never had any problems with it. But I understand some people are nervous about using it (I explain more about my choice of Borax in my Glitter glue slime post). If you choose not to use Borax, you can use saline solution or liquid starch instead.

When I use Borax I mix 1/2 teaspoon of Borax in 1/2 cup of warm water and mix until it is completely dissolved. I will not use all of this solution – in most cases I use 3-4 tablespoons at the most.

Model Magic Clay

Make sure you buy the Crayola Model Magic Clay and not the Air Dry Clay. They are very different and it will not work with regular air dry clay (trust me!).

Model Magic Clay comes in many different colors. I decided to use yellow clay so my slime would have a buttery yellow color to it without having to add any additional coloring.

If you want to use white clay you can, but you will need to add coloring to the mixture.

How to Make Butter Slime

You will need a large bowl, a spoon, and a smaller bowl to mix your Borax in (if using). As well as measuring cups to measure out the ingredients.

Step 1: Make Slime Activator

Follow this step if you are using Borax solution as your slime activator. If you decide to use contact lens solution, then you can skip this step.

In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 teaspoon of Borax and 1/2 cup of warm water.

Stir until it is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.

Step 2: Make Slime Base

Mix together 1/2 cup of Elmer’s Glue, 1/3 Cup of Shaving Foam, 1/4 teaspoon of Baking Soda and 1/4 Cup of water. Make sure you combine these ingredients very well.

If you get lumpy slime, most of the time it is because you didn’t mix together your base ingredients properly before adding the slime activator.

Step 3: Mix Together

Slowly add small amounts of your slime activator.

I normally add about 1 teaspoon at a time, mix well and then add a little more. Depending on the ingredients you have used it will take about 2-4 tablespoons of Borax solution to make slime – but this does vary, so take your time and add it slowly.

Make sure you mix well between adding each small amount of activator. It takes a short time for it to work, so you want to make sure it has fully reacted before adding more.

You want your slime to be a firm, but still slightly wet and sticky consistency. You don’t want it too firm or it will not combine properly with the clay.

Step 4: Knead in the Clay

Once you have made your slime it is time to add the Model Magic Clay.

I’m not entirely sure how much clay I used – you want about equal parts clay to slime. I guess it was about 1 cup of clay.

This is the fun part! Fold together the slime and clay and kneed them until they are completely combined. This does take a few minutes, but kids LOVE to help with this step!

Then your butter slime is ready to play with! Awesome!

There you have it! Your super smooth and stretchy butter slime is now ready to play with! What do you think? Best slime recipe ever?

The texture is so different to regular slime, I know you and your kiddos will love playing with it! My daughter says the true test of butter slime is you can “slice and spread” it, just like real butter!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use borax?

Nope, not at all! This is a butter slime recipe with borax, but you can use any slime activator you like. My preference is for borax, as I find it the most reliable activator (I’ve had bad luck with some of the others). You can try saline solution or liquid starch if you’d prefer.

Can I use any type of clay?

For this butter slime recipe to work, you MUST use Model Magic Clay. Any other type and it won’t mix correctly and you’ll end up with a sticky mess! Model Magic Slime is awesome!

Do I really need to use Elmer’s Glue?

Well, that’s your choice. But in my experience, Elmer’s is the best glue to use to make slime. Cheap or off-brands will not always work properly and may ruin your slime!

My slime is lumpy! How can I fix it?

You might need to just keep mixing it (it’s best to do it with you hands), but if it’s still lumpy, then you might have to start again. Generally, a slime mixture is lumpy because the ingredients (shaving foam, baking soda, water, and glue in this case) were not fully combined before adding the slime activator (borax solution).

My slime is too hard! How can I fix it?

Ugh, sorry to say that there isn’t much you can do! If you slime is too hard, it’s because you added too much slime activator (borax). When adding the activator, you want to make sure you do a tiny amount at a time and thoroughly mix before adding more.

My slime is very sticky and not smooth. How can I fix it?

This is an easy one! You just need to add a little more slime activator (borax). Make sure you only add small amounts at a time and mix it well before adding more. It can take time to fully combine, so keep trying!
