I love decorating for Fall and I’m always looking for new ideas. For a few years I’ve seen melted crayon art, and in particular pumpkins on Pinterest. There are so many different ones and they look great and are such a neat idea.
However, most of the ones I’ve seen use rainbow and primary colors. They make a fun pumpkin craft for kids, but I was looking for something I could display as part of my fall decor.
I decided to play around with more Fall/Halloween colors and see if I could make a more “adult” looking melted crayon pumpkin.
Wow, I’m pleased with the result!
I’ve never done a melted crayon craft before so it was a bit of a learning curve for how to get the crayons to melt evenly. Tips below!

Fall Melted Crayon Pumpkin
Here is the step by step tutorial for how you can make your own Fall melted crayon pumpkin.
Supplies
You don’t need many supplies for this craft and all are easy to get hold of.
I pretty much use Amazon for everything, so I got my supplies from there – it also means I don’t have to send loads of time driving around town getting the supplies! I’m all about saving time!
- White Craft Pumpkin (I used a 6″ pumpkin)
- Tacky Glue
- Crayons (I used black and 2 shades of orange)
- Hair Dryer or Heat Gun
- Fine Orange Glitter (optional)
I decided to use a white pumpkin but you can use an orange one if you prefer.
Step 1: Crayon Preparation
The first thing you want to do is remove the wrapper from your crayons. I used 2 black crayons, 2 dark orange, and 2 lighter orange.
Break the crayons into 2 or 3 pieces each.
Glue the black crayon pieces to the top of the pumpkin using the Tacky Glue.
Tip: It’s very important that you wait for the glue to completely dry. If you don’t then when you apply the heat, the air flow will blow the crayons around and you’ll end up with a big mess!
Step 2: Melt Black Crayons
Using a hair dryer or heat gun melt the crayons until they start to melt and drip down the sides.
This can be pretty messy, so make sure you have newspaper or plastic on your work surface to protect it.
Tip: The crayons can take a while to melt if you are using a hair dryer. Concentrate on one crayon at a time. Once they’ve melted they harden again very quickly, so keep the heat on them until they are melted as you would like.
Once the crayon was melted but before it hardened I sprinkled a small amount orange glitter on the wax.
Step 3: Glue the Orange Crayons
I wanted a layered effect for the melted wax, so I did the black crayons first. Once the black wax was dry I then glued the orange crayons to the top of the pumpkin.
Again make sure that the glue is completely dry before you start heating the crayons.
I alternated the darker and lighter orange crayons. You could use more shades of orange and browns if you choose.
Step 4: Melt Orange Crayons
As with the black crayons you want to use the hair dryer or heat gun to melt the orange crayons.
You need to be careful this time that you don’t overheat the previously melted black wax, as it will melt further and it might spoil the look you are going for.
The black and orange do mix together a little, so take it slowly so you don’t end up with a muddy brown mess!
Once again I sprinkled glitter on the wax while it was still warm. This step is optional, but I think any project looks good with a little extra glitter!
Tip: Make sure you turn the hair dryer off before doing this, or you will blow glitter across the room (yes… speaking from experience here!).
